项目摘要

明治初期小説の文体が、漢字片仮名まじりの漢文訓読体から漢字平仮名まじり文へと移行した過程について検討すべく、訓読体小説の一つのモデルとなった丹羽純一郎訳『花柳春話』を踏襲する一方で、訓読体のみに一元化されない多様な文体を有する作品である関直彦訳『春鶯囀』を主たる対象として考察を行った。考察においては、訳者が『東京日日新聞』の記者であったことに注目し、校閲を担当した福地桜痴の文章論も合わせて分析することを通して、『春鶯囀』の文体が、文体を様式に従属させるのではなく、個別の出来事に即して表現しようとする『東京日日新聞』記者たちの志向を反映したものとして考えられることがわかった。加えて、他の新聞記者たちの作品との比較から、矢野龍渓、藤田茂吉、尾崎行雄ら、当時の政治小説の中心的な作者であった『郵便報知新聞』の記者たちが、『東京日日新聞』の記者たちとは反対に、訓読体という一定の文体によって叙述するという傾向にあるということもわかり、事物を記述することばのあり方をめぐって、二つの対立する立場があったことが明らかになった。関直彦は坪内逍遥とは大学予備門時代の同窓生でもあり、本研究の成果は、逍遥における文体選択、さらには二葉亭四迷における言文一致体の創始について検討する上で重要なものと考える。また、『花柳春話』から『春鶯囀』へと至る作品の流れを整理する中で、『花柳春話』の様式を踏襲した翻訳小説がすべて、『東京新繁昌記』など、風俗を記す漢文の書き手であった服部撫松の校閲を受けていることがわかった。『花柳春話』にもイギリスに留学した丹羽純一郎が実地を見聞した者としてイギリスの風俗を記すことが見受けられ、明治初期において、漢文によって風俗を記述することが流行したことが、訓読体小説の一つの成立基盤となったと考えられること明らかになった。
