The overall objective of this renewal proposal is to delineate and understand mesosphere-thermosphere-ionosphere variability due to nonmigrating tides. Emphasis is on tides forced by tropical convection. The problem is important because it reflects the transport of solar energy back into the upper atmosphere where the lower atmospheric driving then competes with solar and magnetic drivers from above. Specific goals are: (i) Establish the short-term (days), interannual, and solar cycle variability of nonmigrating tidal winds in the MLT/E-region. (ii) Provide observation-based estimates of the global tidal density, temperature and wind structures in the thermosphere-ionosphere, above the upper boundary of current analyses. (iii) Quantify the impact of nonmigrating tides on constituents important to the aeronomy and on the thermospheric energy budget. The method of attack is based on the progress made and the tools developed during earlier phases of the project. Satellite, ground-based, and model data from the CAWSES Tidal Campaigns will be synergistically employed in an analysis effort to establish short-term and thermosphere-ionosphere tidal variability. Processing of TIMED/TIDI tidal winds will continue to investigate longer time-scales. These efforts will be complemented by a tidal analysis of constituent and emission measurements from TIMED/SABER, TIMED/GUVI, ODIN/OSIRIS.
