本研究の主たる目的は、カナダ先住民族の権利保障による生活実践への影響、特に裁判所により認められた先住民族の土地権原（Aboriginal title）に基づき、人々がどのように土地利用を展開しているのかを実地調査を通じて検討することにある。本年度は、文献調査を中心的に行いつつ予備的な現地調査も行なった。文献調査では、法と権利を取り扱う人類学分野の概説書、ならびにカナダを主として北米の先住民族の権利や法、歴史に関する法学・歴史学分野の概説書を中心に精読した。歴史的な経緯から、カナダ先住民族を取り巻く法や権利の現状は極めて複雑化している。そのため、これに関する基礎知識を得たことにより、問題の所在をより明確に把握することが可能となった。さらに、法や権利に関する人類学的研究の理論的背景も踏まえ、本研究をより学際的な見地から進めることが可能となり、人類学に留まらない学問的な貢献の余地がより明らかになった。加えて、2018年8月16日から8月31日の約2週間、カナダ西部のブリティッシュ・コロンビア州の都市であるバンクーバーに滞在しつつ、予備的な現地調査を行なった。特に、北米先住民族の資料を豊富に保管するブリティッシュ・コロンビア大学人類学部および人類学博物館を中心として、カナダにおける先住民族の権利をめぐる裁判資料や生活文化等に関する文献・資料の収集および調査を行なった。同時に、本研究で中心的な研究対象となるチルコーティン（Tsilhqot'in）の人々の言語や文化に関する資料も収集した。以上を通じて、本研究において中心的な調査対象となる人々や社会を取り巻く個別の状況に対する理解を深めることで、将来的な実地調査のための基盤づくりに努めた。
