研究の目的は、現代アフリカに暮らす人びとが日常生活で用いるモノが不用になる過程を人とモノの多層的な関係の様態（＝マテリアリティ）と位置づけ、市場経済や近代学校教育の浸透、砂漠化など自然環境の変化にともなってゴミのマテリアリティが変成するメカニズムを解明することである。四年度目は、新型コロナウィルスの影響を考慮して、研究成果発信準備とインターネット会議システムなどを活用した学術交流を中心に研究活動を進めた。本研究プロジェクトメンバーと、在来・外来および耐久性を基準に分類したモノの４類型がゴミになる過程とその物質的な循環の特質について成果を共有した。四年度目は、在来のモノ（農産物）を使い捨てるモノとして循環させていく人びとの在来の知識や慣習的な行為に注目して、ものの循環とマテリアリティについての検討を進めた。これをふまえて、2022年3月10日にものの循環とマテリアリティにかかわる国際ワークショップをオンラインで開催した。ワークショップでは、ライデン大学アフリカセンター（オランダ）よりオモ系言語の専門家であるAzeb Amha博士をゲスト講演者として招聘した。Azeb博士は、エチオピア、オモ系言語を母語とする人々の主食作物であるエンセーテに関わる用例について報告した。これに加えて、日本国内でエチオピアのオモ系言語の研究に従事している言語学者も参加し、ものの循環とマテリアリティについて、言語学的な知見と人類学的な知見をふまえて議論を進めた。2022年10月にはエチオピアの南オモ県の教育行政に関わる役人が編纂した語彙リストを入手する機会を得た。この語彙リストを編纂した現地の関係者と協議し、この研究プロジェクトで整理・分析を続けてきた語彙のリストを加えて、このプロジェクトの研究成果の一部として4700語を収録したアリ語の語彙集を刊行し、現地の教育機関を介して研究成果を還元した。
