19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけて活躍した学者らの一部は、死後の生や魂の存在といった問題を実証的に解明しようと試みた。この運動と、知的階級を出自とする同時代の作家による幽霊を題材とする小説との関わりを明らかにするため、文献調査を行なった。主な調査対象となった作家は、ヘンリー・ジェイムズとイーディス・ウォートンの2名である。両者は、同時代の思想や研究の動向に十分なアクセスを持っており、幽霊小説の執筆にあたりそれらを活用したと見られる。このことは、作家らが雑誌等に発表したエッセイや、個人的な書簡、日記に残した文章を検討することによって立証された。ウォートンの作品では、そうした学者やスピリチュアリストへの直接的言及や関連する題材の活用が見られた。これは、ウォートンが一般的に示す科学や宗教に対する態度とは異なるものであり、作家の新たな側面を示す発見であると思われる。ジェイムズの場合は、学者らの運動を題材にした幽霊物語を執筆することに加え、同問題をメタフィジカルな問題への探求という形に捉え直し、より幅広い意識のもとで執筆していることを明らかにした。また、そうした探究心がThe Turn of the Screw（『ねじの回転』）をはじめとする作品の構造に影響していることを明らかにした。ウォートンに関連する上記の研究成果を、米国Penn State University Pressが発行する学術誌Edith Wharton Reviewにおいて発表した。また、ウォートンとジェイムズに関する研究成果を博士論文としてまとめ、北海道大学へ提出した。
