项目摘要

本年度は、去年度に引き続き具体的な動詞が用いられたthere構文の振る舞いを大規模コーパスでの用例を用いて調査した。1、2年目の研究で突き止めたthere構文における音放出動詞の振る舞いと比較する形で、本年度は新たに光放出動詞・物質放出動詞を伴うthere構文を調査した。具体的には、現代英語コーパスと歴史英語コーパスを用いた調査から、光放出動詞は、音放出動詞の場合とは違って、典型的な自動詞文でもthere構文でも主語使用の割合が変化せず、光放出源を主語に選択することが明らかになった。この理由として、there構文は主語名詞の導入のため、動詞が表す情報は「軽い」方が良いのだが、音放出の際には、放出源に動きが伴うため、音放出動詞はthere構文では振る舞いが修正されるが (音名詞が主語に生起する)、光放出の際には、放出源に動きがほとんど伴わず、一般動詞と同じ振る舞いができる、と主張した。また、物質放出動詞は、物質をどのような様態で放出するかを指定するため、there構文では放出源名詞が主語に生起しないと主張した。最終的に、1年目からの研究を全てまとめる形で、一般動詞を伴うthere構文の特徴を記述し、そこから得られた知見を構文文法の枠組みから考察した。具体的に言うと、一見存在や出現を表していないような周辺的な動詞を伴う三種類のthere構文を対象に、それらの表現が持つ特徴を大規模コーパスをもとに炙り出し、それぞれの表現が他のthere構文から予測されない特異性を持つ、もしくは、十分な頻度を持つ、下位構文として定着していることを示した。また、それらの表現が示す特異性は一見恣意的なように思えるが、全ての表現は「構文」として存在・出現を表しており、存在のthere構文もしくは直示のthere構文の語用論的機能をうまく果たす形で構文が形成されていると主張した。
