本研究課題の目的は、英語に存在するいくつかの使役的な意味を持つ構文、その中でもいわゆる交替とよばれる現象にかかわる使役構文、に着目し、それらの通時的な発達や変化の事実を提示し、交替にかかわる構文間の関係を認知的なネットワークの観点から考察することである。本研究は、交替現象に関係する使役的意味を持つ構文の共時的な分布とそれらの通時的変化に対する実証研究と、通時的発達に対するネットワーク理論の構築、に大別される。採択期間の１年目となる今年度は、実証研究に重点を置いてデータの収集を行った。具体的には、所格交替（例：spray the wall with paintとspray paint on the wallとの動詞の目的語の交替）に含まれる動詞および構文の、特に後期近代英語期（Late Modern English, 1700-1900年頃）以降における使用と変化の実態を調査した。所格交替に関する先行研究では、しばしばsprayがその代表的な動詞として挙げられ、それらのふるまいに関する議論が進められてきた。しかしながら、研究代表者のこれまでの研究から、今から100年ほど前まではsprayは動詞としての使用それ自体が稀であったことが分かっている。この事実を踏まえて、sprayクラスとよばれるsprayと意味的に類似した動詞（例：sprinkle, splash, shower）の後期近代英語期における使用の実態を調査した。その内容は「英語におけるsprayクラス所格交替動詞の歴史的発達について」という題目で、言語変異・変化研究ユニット第10回ワークショップ（東京外国語大学アジア・アフリカ研究会第6回研究会と共催、一般公開）にて口頭発表した。
