本研究は、医学において統計に基づく正常／異常概念が出現した歴史的プロセスを解明することを目的とする。令和2年度は、統計と結びつけられた正常／異常概念の出現という事態を分析するために、フランスの社会学者エミール・デュルケームと心理学者アルフレッド・ビネーに着目した。デュルケームは、自殺率などの統計的数値が恒常的であることこそが、その社会が正常であること、つまり規範的な状態であることの証とみなしていた。彼にとって社会学は、社会の健康状態（正常な状態）と病気の状態（病理、異常な状態）を事実の客観的観察によって明らかにし、それによって人間の行為規範を示すものであった。彼は社会における犯罪率・自殺率・出生率に関する議論で、コントやベルナールによって提唱された医学・生理学における正常／異常概念、すなわち正常と異常の差異を質的ではなく量的な変異であると捉える思考を受け継ぎ、社会学的現象における平均は種における一般的存在を示していて正常であり、少数で平均から外れている例外的な存在は病理的・異常であると論じた。ここで彼は正常と異常についての把握を統計的な発想と結びつけて解釈している。ビネーは世界で初めて知能テストを考案した人物として著名であるが、この知能テストという発想自体が、ある人が知的に「遅れ」ている状態とそうでない状態は連続的で量的な相違であるという発想に基づいている。これはまさに、前述のコントやベルナールの正常と異常の差異の把握そのものである。またビネーは知能テストにおいて平均を基準としていたが、ここでいう平均とは規範であると同時に、集団の計測によって現れる正規曲線の中心であった。以上のように令和2年度は、医学・生理学における状況を分析するための第一歩として、社会学や心理学において連続的な正常／異常概念と統計とを結びつけて論じている人物を特定し、その思想を分析した。
