本研究は、中世ドミニコ会における書簡コミュニケーションと統治の関係を、修道会諸制度、書簡利用の実践、そして修道会外部の書簡文化からの影響という三つの視角を組み合わせ考察するものである。第一年目の本年度は、研究全体の素材となる中世ドミニコ会史料の収集と、その性格の整理・把握に努めた。対象とした史料は第一に、修道会の最高指導者である修道会総長の書簡記録簿である。本研究の基幹的史料とも言えるこの類型の文書は、半が未刊行の手稿の状態にとどまり、体系的な史料論的考察の対象となっていない。この間隙を埋めることも意図しつつ、本史料の残存状況、性格、史学的価値などの整理に務めた。第二に、ドミニコ会の最高意思決定機関である総会の決議記録について、体系的な検討が不可欠であった。各地域管区の代表を集めて開かれる修道会総会の決定事項は数次にわたる写しの作成によって修道会組織の末端まで伝達された。総会決議記録は修道会行政の様々な局面における文書利用についての規定を多く含み、組織統治と文書の関係を考察する材料を与える。それゆえ、史料体としての性格、残存状況を把握すると同時に、内容に一定踏み込んだ分析にも取り組んだ。修道会行政の基幹的文書とも言える二つの史料の分析から、本年度中にすでに複数の研究成果を公にすることができた。すなわちまず、上述のような両史料の、ひいては修道会統治の機関としての総長と総会の特色についての考察結果を、本研究員制度に採用される以前から取り組んできた修道士と大学学位の関係という問題と結びつけたものとして、日本西洋史学会大会で発表を行い、これに基づく論文が『史学雑誌』に掲載予定である。さらに、やはり修道士の学位取得に焦点を定めつつ、総長と総会というドミニコ会の二元支配体制の諸相、言二つの統治機構の間の協調と相克の諸側面の具体的スケッチを、地中海学会研究会での報告を通じて試みた。
