2021年9月に開催されたキリスト教史学会大会シンポジウム「近代都市形成期のキリスト教と社会事業」で研究代表者と分担研究者がそれぞれおこなった報告を、シンポジウムでの議論とその後の研究とを踏まえて論文としてまとめる作業を進めた。それらの論文は2023年9月にキリスト教史学会監修：馬渕彰編著『近代都市形成期のキリスト教社会事業：黎明期の苦悩』として教文館より刊行予定である。そこで明らかになったことを要約すると以下の通りである。１．キリスト教社会事業では、貧困は文字通り神学的（聖書的）な意味における「罪」の結果であり、それがカリタス、隣人愛にもとづく社会事業の重要な根拠の一つとなっていた。２．同時にそれは、カリタス、隣人愛の対象となるに値する貧民と値しない貧民を区別する根拠となる危険性をはらむものでもあった。３．キリスト教的規範による社会のみが社会的弊害を克服でき、キリスト者の責任からなされる社会的行為のみが真実の人間性であるとする世界観にもとづくキリスト教社会事業は、近代的福祉国家原理とは必然的に緊張関係にあった。４．一方で、19世紀の都市においては、市民たちは自らが依拠する世界観にもとづく「公共の福利」「公共善」の実現をめざしながら、時には競合し、時には協働しながら、現代の福祉国家へと続く下地を準備していった。今年度はコロナ禍以降初めてとなる史料調査を、ドイツ・ケルン市にあるケルン市歴史文書館で部分的に実施することができた。ボン大学のマンフレート・グローテン教授、およびハレ大学のマンフレート・ヘットリング教授と面談し、本研究計画で分析対象となっている愛国協会などの市民結社と敬虔派に加えて、メノー派等他のキリスト教各宗派とのネットワークとそれぞれの特徴を丁寧に分析する必要性について助言を受け、今後、本研究課題を発展させていくうえで有益な示唆を得ることができた。
