2022年度は、当初予定していた研究期間を延長して臨んだ1年であったが、引き続き新型コロナウィルス感染症の影響により、海外渡航調査を実施することがかなわなかったため、遺憾ながら研究の完成には至らず、研究期間の再延長を申請する事態となっている。現地での史料調査の不足を抱えながらも、教皇特任裁判が生み出した人的ネットワーク形成の実態について、情報量の豊富な人物に関する事例研究を積み重ねていく作業を中心に、可能な限りの分析を進めている。具体的には、セント・アンドリューズ司教やグラスゴー司教などが、特任裁判を通じて誰とどのような人的関係を持ったかを明らかにしたうえで、そうした関係性が、各々の人物のその後の動向とどのように結びついているか、長期的な展望の中に位置づけて理解することを試みている。ところで、教皇特任裁判による人的関係創出の機会は、国王宮廷や他の機会とすべてにおいて異質なわけではなく、機能として共通する部分もある。そこで、サンプルとして抽出した人物の生涯にわたる活動の全体像を可能な限り把握し、各人物の人的ネットワーク形成において教皇特任裁判への関与が果たした特有の役割を明らかにすることを目指している。個々の人物の活動実態を追跡する方法としては、年代記等の叙述史料の記述にくわえて、主として証書史料に記載された情報を網羅的に精査する必要があるが、この点において、未刊行史料を分析する現地調査の実施を待つ状況が続いている。
