本研究は、12～13世紀のスコットランドにおける教会管区（provincia）に関して、制度的組織の側面ではなく、教会人の人的紐帯の観点から、その統合過程を分析するものである。当時のスコットランドは、王国共同体意識の涵養と単一のネイション形成が進む時期にあたるが、従来の研究では、そのプロセスの理解において「教会人の共同体」の存在が十分に検討されてこなかった。その要因のひとつとして、当時のスコットランド教会を統一的組織の未整備な管区として理解する制度的観点への偏重が認められる。そこで本研究では、スコットランド管区における高位の教会人たちの行動歴を丹念に調査し、彼らの間の相互交流の実態を分析することで、人的ネットワークによってひとつに結ばれる「教会人の共同体」が成立するプロセスを具体的に明らかにすることを目指す。教会人の行動を跡づけるための調査対象となる史料は、年代記等の叙述史料と証書を中心とする文書史料に分かれる。研究初年度となる2022年度は、いまだ新型コロナウィルス感染症の影響によってスコットランドにおける史料調査に制約があったため、刊行史料が利用可能な前者の叙述史料（『メルローズ年代記』・『ホリルード年代記』・『ゲスタ・アンナリア』・フォーダン『スコットランド人の年代記』・バウアー『スコティクロニコン』など）の分析を中心に、教会人の動向に関する記述を網羅的に抽出して整理する作業を進めている。一方で、文書史料に関しては、刊行済みの史料（Regesta Regum Scottorum等の国王の証書集や、Bannatyne Club等によって刊行された教会施設のカーチュラリ）に加えて、主としてスコットランドの文書館に所蔵されている未刊行の写本も含めて、分析対象となる教会人の情報が含まれると想定される史料のリストの作成に従事し、翌年度以降のスコットランドにおける実地調査の準備を進めている。
