This research project set out to examine how practices and values cultivated in the feminized, private spheres of everyday lives shape the masculinized, public spaces and practices of political work in Japan to build an approach to gender equality that goes beyond “work-life balance” to revalue home in work itself. By revealing how practices and values that emerge from private, domestic, and intimate lives inform public policymaking processes, the project aimed to revalue what is often considered the feminine domains in work. The project aimed to provide a basis to propose alternative policies on gender equality. The project had to be terminated due to the principal researcher's relocation to an overseas research institution. Within the limited timeframe before the termination, however, the following outcomes were achieved:1)I conducted preliminary research with academics in universities, employing the innovative methodologies of graphic recording, photovoice interviews, and collaborative ethnographies. The preliminary research revealed the effectiveness of these methodologies and allowed me to build a foundation for methodologically innovative research.2)I published the results of the above research as blog articles, thereby facilitating the public dissemination of knowledge.3) I was invited to speak about the methodological innovations at the Australian National University Department of Anthropology's Method and Theory Workshop in 2021. I thereby contributed to the international knowledge sharing in the field of anthropology.
