本研究では， theの運用に長けた無冠詞言語母語話者に対する調査等から，日本で教えられている，theを使用するための「定」性感を補正しtheのトレーニング法を開発する。[1] 弱定NP（単数：唯一に同定が出来ない名詞句。複数: theが示す属性を持つモノ全ては指さない名詞句）等を含む多種の名詞句に関して，適切な冠詞の使用法を問う問題を日本語母語話者（L1Jp語話者），フィンランド語母語話者（L1Fi語話者），チェコ語母語話者（L1Cz語話者）に課し考究した。L1Fi語話者とL1Cz語話者は弱定NP問題，特に複数弱定NP問題の得点が高かった。これは，両言語自身の定冠詞の発達により醸成された弱定NP感覚が英語に転移したことが要因として考えられた。一方，日本語における定冠詞の発達，ひいてはL1Jp語話者のtheに対する感覚の醸成には相当な時間がかかると思われる。よって，弱定NPを含む定NPの感覚を教育によって補っていくことが必要である。ところで，複数弱定NPのように，theがついた名詞句は必ずしもtheが示す属性を持つモノ全てを指すとは限らない。しかし，中学，高校の教師は約60%が複数名詞句にtheがつくとtheが示す属性を持つモノ全てを指すと誤った認識を持っていた。このため，現在，まず複数弱定NPの特性を解析し教育現場に情報を提供しようと考えている。[2] L1Jp語話者である多くの学生，ひいては中学，高校の先生が，theの概念を話し手と聞き手の共通理解に基づく「定性」ではなく，「特定性」と捉えていることが判明した。また，L1Jp語話者への調査において，話し手，聞き手どちらにも「特定」でないモノでも，それは「特定」なモノであるとした回答者が約半数いた。これらの結果は他のデータと合わせて解析中である。
