The collaborative research centre 273 is based on the hypothesis that heating of tumours up to a temperature range of 40-43°C leads to an enhanced effectiveness of various oncological therapies (radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immune therapy, gene therapy etc.) due to different biological and physiological mechanisms. The methodical development, therefore, is of utmost importance where heating up a defined body area and attaining elevated temperatures at tolerable powers is the primary aim. Several methodical projects aim at designing and building a suitable phased array applicator in the radio frequency range. For a controlled application, the transforming networks must be particularly improved. The steering parameters are optimized in a planning system. During treatment, monitoring of temperatures maps, registration of perfusion and the radiated electrical fields (electro optical sensors or special measurements in the network) with magnetic resonance tomography is necessary. A clinical evaluation with presently available commercial therapy systems is already being carried out in phase III studies, parallell to the technological development. Treatment strategies for locally progressive rectum, cervical and prostate carcinomas exist presently, with their clinical application. Essential parameters to be evaluated is the interaction of sequential chemotherapy-radiotherapy-hyperthermia therapies and the necessary or desirable temperature ranges. Pretherapeutical, intra-operative and post-interventional investigations in radiology and molecular biology of tumor material give rise to further information in regional deep hyperthermia.
