项目摘要

日本および日系アメリカ人に関するAFSCの戦中と戦後の活動には明白な連続性があることから研究計画を見直し、2022年度からは米国における日系アメリカ人の強制収容と転住も研究対象に含めることとし、そのために研究分担者が加わった。2022年度もコロナ禍で海外渡航に制限があったため、研究代表者と分担者はAFSC本部資料室での資料調査を断念し、AFSCの定期刊行物や在米中の研究者を通して入手した資料、ならびにハヴァフォード大学クエーカー・コレクションから取り寄せた資料を集中的に解読した。研究代表者は、アメリカのクエーカーたちと内村鑑三、新渡戸稲造との関係について、アメリカの学会で発表した。フィラデルフィア年会ミッション・ボードの議事録に戦時下おけるボードの活動を追いAFSCとの協働関係を確認、さらにAFSC議事録からAFSCが独自に日本復興支援プロジェクト案を用意していた事実を発見し、それぞれ「戦時下のミッション・ボード」、「米国フレンズ奉仕団とララ物資の始まり（１）」として研究会で発表した。その他、 AFSCの職員および協力者として日米両国で活動したエスター・ローズとハーバート・ニコルソンの英語インタビュー音声を入手、文字起し作業に取り組み、英語スクリプトを作成した。研究分担者は、第二次世界大戦中にAFSCが従事した日系アメリカ人の再定住支援活動についてアメリカ文化研究会および移民研究会で発表した。AFSCが日系アメリカ人の収容所を管理していた政府組織「戦時転住局(WRA)」よりも先んじて日系人の再定住計画に着手し、WRAの意向に沿う形をとりながらAFSCの計画を進めていったことついて述べた。また、AFSCの日系人の東部への再定住支援活動についても焦点を当てた。当事者である日系人の日記も史料として活用し、AFSC、WRA、日系人それぞれの視点から再定住支援活動を考察した。
