本研究は、シェイクスピアおよび同時代の劇作家の作品を分析対象とし、歴代の君主がどのように初期近代の文学テクストに表象されてきたか、劇作家が君主を表象の対象にすることでテクストがどのような政治性を帯びていたのか、また彼らが君主を表象した背景にどのような政治的そして興行的な力学が働いていたのかを考察する演劇テクスト研究である。本研究では、これまでの君主表象研究およびそれに依拠した初期近代イギリス文学研究を整理し、その課題を指摘した上で、君主表象に焦点を当てた演劇テクストの分析を行う。シェイクスピアのエリザベス朝期の作品をはじめ、シェイクスピアの同時代に活躍していた一群の劇作家らの作品を、君主表象の分析を切り口として新たに読み解き、それぞれの作品の解釈に新たな視座を導入するとともに、初期近代イングランドにおいて 劇作家たちが当時の君主表象とどのように関わり合っていたのかを明らかにすることを目的とする。2022年度は「宮廷演劇」の研究を主に行い、特にエリザベス朝期におけるジョン・リリーの作品群、ジェイムズ朝期において宮廷の王族たちも上演に加わったサミュエル・ダニエルの宮廷仮面劇およびベン・ジョンソンの宮廷仮面劇を分析対象とした。また、前年度の「歴史劇」の研究の一環として『ヘンリー五世』に関する論考を執筆した。
