当該年度は、研究計画に従って、日本におけるディケンズの翻訳・翻案における語り手の変容の問題を扱った。前年度の研究成果である坪内逍遥や夏目漱石によるディケンズ理解のみでなく、そこから実際にディケンズ作品の翻訳・翻案に着目して実際に研究を進めることで、明治時代におけるディケンズ受容の文学的・文化的背景を探ったのである。とりわけ前年度から注目していた語り手の問題は引き続き重要な位置づけを行い、精査した。また、当時の日本における翻訳（翻案）態度の違いにも眼を向ける必要があった。英語から日本語と異なる言語に移す行為において、人称の問題は壁であると同時に日本語の幅を広げる機会でもあり、その周辺では論争も起きていた。中でも森田思軒は周密文体を提案するなどして中心的な役割を果たしている。その思軒がディケンズ作品の抄訳を行った「牢帰り」や、やはり翻訳を行いながらその文体を研究していた内田魯庵による『酔魔』などを取り上げながら、ディケンズの翻訳作品における語り手と人称の問題を、ディケンズの原作と比較しながら検討した。その結果、単に原作から人称が変化するというだけでなく、その変化によって本来原作にはなかった意味合いが生まれる箇所を確認することもできた。これは日本英語表現学会の研究会シンポジウムにおいて発表した。ただし、取り扱った作品はいずれもディケンズ初期の短編や挿入された掌編であり、ディケンズ受容の全容からすればかなり細部の研究結果であるため、後期作品についても同様の調査を行う必要があった。そこで、後期の『二都物語』と、『英語青年』という雑誌内で連載が進められたその翻訳の差異についても確認した。その前提として、原作の語りについて研究する必要が生じたため、登場人物の描き方についてをテーマとした学会発表も12月に行った。
