本研究は、Slobinの提唱する仮説「Thinking for speaking・writing (発話のための思考)」を枠組みとして使うことで、日本人上級英語学習者が英語表現にどのような意味と機能を込めて移動事象を説明するかを調べ、それがネイティブとどう違うのかを調査する。また、第二言語習得研究では「アウトプット」として同じ言語行動と扱われがちな「スピーキング」と「ライティング」を比べることにより、認知的には似て非なるその二つの言語行動の違いを明らかにする目的がある。そのため、本研究のデータ分析・考察の参考とするべく、最新のThinking for speaking研究の調査に加え、「スピーキング」と「ライティング」の認知的違いを第一言語・第二言語研究に学んだ。第一言語研究では、失語症研究からスピーキングとライティングが違う認知活動であることが発見されている一方、第二言語研究ではスピーキングデータとライティングデータを比較した研究が少なく、その必要性が叫ばれている。Task-based language teaching (TBLT)の研究では少数であるがModalityの違いによる第二言語活動の違いの研究があり、Taskの種類がスピーキングとライティングの言語活動に及ぼす影響が異なることが報告されており、第二言語でのModality間の認知活動の違いも示唆されている。データ分析については、MAXQDAというソフトウェアを使い、スピーキングデータとライティングデータ両方へのタグ付を進めている。残念ながらデータを数量化し、統計分析をするまでには及んでいないので、2023年度の課題となっている。
