项目摘要

令和4年度の研究実績は、翻訳の刊行1点と研究発表1点である。令和4年11月にミネルヴァ書房より、アンドリュー・ロッター著『原爆の世界史―開発前夜から核兵器の拡散まで』（原題：Hiroshima: A World's Bomb）が刊行された。「はじめに」および「終章」を含めて全10章構成のうち、報告者の担当は第4－6章、アメリカにおける原爆開発、原爆使用の決定、その背景としての戦略爆撃作戦の拡大、日本への投下とその被害がおおまかな内容である。本書においては、米英による戦略爆撃が無差別な性質を持ち、きわめて大規模な犠牲を生んだこと、そしてそのことが原爆投下による大量殺戮への道筋を開いたとして、きわめて重要な意味が与えられている。第二次世界大戦における戦略爆撃作戦の歴史的意義を理解するという点で、本書の刊行本研究に大きく資するところがあった。研究発表のタイトルは「アメリカの強さと軍産複合体―科学・技術研究と大学の役割」である。第二次世界大戦期を中心に、冷戦期に至るまでを射程とし、アメリカの「強さ」の源泉にはその科学・技術力があり、その研究拠点として大学がきわめて重要な意味を持ったことを確認した。第二次世界大戦期の戦略爆撃作戦の実施においても、航空機産業の生産能力だけでなく、大学および企業の研究開発能力があってこそそれが可能になったのである。本報告は戦略爆撃の実施にいかに大学が重要な位置を占めたかを示唆するものであった。以上に加え、アメリカでの資料収集は叶わなかったが、国会図書館等で可能な限り資料を収集し、令和5年度の研究に備えた。
