本研究は，日本国内の洋装化の黎明期に，女子を対象に行われたミシン裁縫教育と洋装化の進展に関し，ミシン裁縫教育の具体的な指導事例から得られる知見から考察をおこなうものである。調査に用いる主な資料は，明治39年に有楽町に設立された「シンガーミシン裁縫女学院」に明治41年から2年間通っていた生徒が遺した実物の授業教材資料群で，洋服の型紙製図と衣服雛形と授業ノートで構成されている。これらの資料群からは，当時のミシン裁縫教育においてどのような指導が展開されていたのかを把握することが可能である。洋装化の黎明期において裁縫の機械化と洋裁教育の実態から新規的な文化の受容の様相を捉え，女性の社会進出と工業化や，そのための教育としての裁縫の位置づけを明らかにすることを目的とし，研究を進めている。同時代には，「東京裁縫女学校」においても「シンガーミシン裁縫女学院」と同様に裁縫雛形教育がおこなわれており，両者の比較から，ミシン裁縫教育の特異性を炙り出したい。本研究で得た知見を元に，第７４回日本家政学会年次大会の服飾史・服飾美学部会公開シンポジウム「裁縫雛形にみる女子教育の諸相」において，事例報告をおこなった。「シンガーミシン裁縫女学院」の雛形は同年代の他校の裁縫雛形との特徴と異なる部分が顕著であり，ミシンを用いた洋裁教育は，和裁による手縫いから発展した洋裁教育とは別の系譜がある事が推測できた。
