The collaborative research centre 605 "Elementary Firction Processes" performs basic research with two technical friction systems: the "disc brake" and the "rail/wheel contact". These systems also determine the selection of the materials which are studied experimentally. The friction contact in brakes and between wheel and rail provides a broad research area. Even though both systems are widely used in the real world the constitutional phenomena are mostly unexplained. The collaborative research centre 605 made it its business to bridge between the fricional properties and the processes occurring at thecontact areas. The goal is to find elementary processes on different scales which are responsible for the phenomena observed at the contact zones.
