集中治療室に入室した重症患者の集中治療室退室後の後遺症や機能障害の総称である集中治療後症候群（post-intensive care syndrome, PICS）を調査する前向き観察研究が2023年10月より開始となった。PICSあるいは重症患者の家族の精神障害の総称であるPICS-Family（PICS-F）発症により、患者やその家族のQOLが低下し、失業にまで追いやられてしまうことが報告されており、社会的損失は計り知れない。本研究により、本邦のPICSあるいはPICS-Fのデータベースを構築し、本邦の疫学調査や有病率、発症の危険因子を抽出し、その予防策を講じることを目的としている。当初、郵送によるアンケート調査を行い、集中治療室退室6ヶ月後、12ヶ月後であったが、携帯電話によるSMS（ショートメッセージシステム）を用いたアンケートシステムを構築できたため、ICU退室3ヶ月後、6ヶ月後、12ヶ月後の身体機能や認知機能、メンタルヘルス、QOLの調査を行うように研究計画書の修正を行った。また、対象を人工呼吸管理を要した患者に限定せず、集中治療室に入室した全症例とし、本邦のPICS/PICS-Fの疫学調査を反映するようにした。2023年3月31日までにアンケート回答が得られたのは、大阪医科薬科大学病院の1施設で対象患者68名に対して、37件であった。現在、集中治療後症候群の有病率や入院時に得られた臨床データ、DPCデートとを突合させ、発症のリスク因子の解析を行なっているところである。
