英文摘要
The collaborative research centre 484 focusses on the investigationof cooperative phenomena in quantum-mechanical, many-particle systems in solid-state physics. The basic question motivating the research may be formulated as follows: how do the interaction and collective behavior of the microscopic degrees of freedom of electrons and lattice lead to ordering phenomena and metal-insulator transitions? The transition-metal oxides are the ideal class of materials to analyse these questions, and hence represent the basis for the systems under investigation. A comprehensive study in this field is effected by combining research activities in the disciplines of solid-state physics and materials science. Applying the most modern experimental and theoretical methods the collaborative research centre intends to examine the microscopic foundations of the above phenomena and, simultaneously, establish connections with application-oriented topics. The research centre consists of twelve subprojects which are divided evenly between experimental and theoretical research.
