本研究の目的は12世紀から17世紀にかけてのジャイナ教における聖者観の変化過程の解明である。ジャイナ教における聖者は時代によって重視される人物が異なる。聖典期の祖師に対して、聖者伝文学の発展期にはラーマなどを中心とした63偉人が形成された。一方、12世紀以降はより多様な人物が聖者とされていく。2022年度は12世紀以降の聖者信仰と密接に関係のある聖地信仰あるいは聖地巡礼について、研究を進めた。以下研究の概要を述べる。ジャイナ教文学において、12世紀頃から、言語としては古グジャラート語、詩の形式としてはラーソー、そして主題としては聖地を取り上げる文学作品が現れる。これら古グジャラート語、ラーソー、聖地の3点は12世紀以降、グジャラート地域の文学を構成する要素として重要性を増していくが、同地域のジャイナ教文学の伝統の観点からは、12世紀以前のジャイナ教文学の伝統との連続性が欠けているように思われる。なぜなら、それまでのジャイナ教文学は、グジャラート北部を中心としてプラークリット語およびアパブランシャ語による聖者伝文学の伝統が蓄積されており、特に同時期には文学作品を著すのに必要な文法・修辞・語彙などについての著作をヘーマチャンドラがまとめたばかりでもあるため、新たな要素を導入する理由が見出しがたいためである。そこで、2022年度の研究では、ジャイナ教の聖地であるギルナール山、シャトルンジャヤ山、アーブー山を主題とした初期ラーソー文学作品を調査した。初期ラーソー文学では、12世紀以前の聖者伝文学の主題とされたラーマやクリシュナの伝記よりもむしろ、聖地や聖地と結びついた聖人を好んで取り上げている。調査の結果、その背景としてジャイナ教徒の文学活動を保護していた王権が政治的な状況変化により、保護を続けることが難しくなったため、都市部から聖地へと拠点を移した可能性を示すことができた。
