この研究の目的は、明治維新後、雅楽伝承の広範な伝播と継続的な実践を支える人材として地方に下った「元楽人」の活動と当該地域の雅楽実践を明らかにすることである。雅楽は天皇儀礼と結びつき、幕末までは関西の禁裏楽人、明治以降は東京の雅楽局（のち宮内省（庁）楽部）の楽人を頂点として伝承されて来た。従来の雅楽研究もそれら「中央」の雅楽と楽人を対象とするものが大多数である。しかし、雅楽はいくつかの地方では古くから実践され、明治以降は政府の雅楽解禁政策により、雅楽を持たなかった地域にさらに広がる。その際、中央の楽人と地方の人々の間を取り持つ「中間師匠」として、雅楽局を辞め、地方に下った楽人がいる。彼らは中央の第一線から離脱した人々として雅楽史の表舞台からは消え、活動の詳細も知られていないが、地方の雅楽の定着に大いに貢献したと考えられる。本研究は、伊勢、静岡、尾張・三河で活動した元楽人たちに注目し、歴史資料と現地の雅楽関係者への聞き取り調査によって、彼らの活動と当該地域の雅楽の歴史と現在を検証する。22年度は、1) 伊勢神宮の史料調査と、2) 静岡県士族の元楽人の調査を行った。1)の成果としては、伊勢神宮（神宮文庫）の資料（『祭典課日誌』）を閲覧し、明治初期の在来の芸能の執行状況と雅楽の新たな導入について確認できた。2)については、旧紅葉山楽人で静岡県士族になった東儀弘長家の文書調査によって、紅葉山楽人が江戸時代から伝承してきた伝承（知）の全般に加え、明治以降に新たに獲得されたレパートリーがあることがわかった。また、静岡県で神職を務めた大井安親、大井菅麿の日記から、明治期における宗教儀礼における雅楽の導入の静岡県下の状況解明の端緒を得た。
