研究の目的としては、室町時代～戦国期（14～16世紀）の禅僧の肖像画、いわゆる頂相に付された漢詩文《画賛》を主とする《基礎資料集成》を作成し、様々な「頂相制作のコンテクスト」について事例を集め、理解を深めることである。そのため、本研究では、①現存する頂相及び文献上の頂相の画賛を収集してデジタル・テキスト化する。②禅僧及び画賛の関連史料や語句索引を併せた頂相画賛の《基礎資料集成》を作成し、頂相の制作目的や儀礼での使用、禅僧たちの人間関係など具体的事例の集積から、頂相の全体像を照射する。③広く禅宗絵画や肖像画の研究にも新たな理解を生む研究とすることをめざす。研究実施計画に従い、2022年度は①頂相画賛の収集と②基礎資料作成のための画賛読解を中心に行った。4月～6月には協力研究員等アルバイト及び協力要員5名を確保し、5月から彼らのための基礎勉強会・画賛読解勉強会をオンラインで毎週2，3回ペースで実施。20点の画賛を読解。9月～12月にアルバイトによる画像のスキャンとデジタルデータ入力を開始した。展覧会図録等に収録の頂相画賛をまずは、PDFの変換ソフトでスキャンデータをWordに起こしATOKを利用し旧字・外字を含めWordで入力した。一部ファイルメーカーでテスト版の作成を始めた。10月～3月に研究員の1人に委託業務として入力内容の点検を依頼した。総数132点（出典の書籍によるダブりも含む）。申請者と分担者は、東京国立文化財研究所で資料室の頂相の調書から資料複写を2回行い、2度目には、それに加え地方の文化財目録についても頂相データの収集を行った。また、申請者・分担者・協力者とで山口県立美術館、下関市立は歴史博物館で特別観覧を行い、その際、画賛研究の進捗状況のミーティングを行っている。
