项目摘要

これまでの宗達研究の主流は、一連の宗達様式を示す作品群の中から宗達直筆の作品を抽出した上で、宗達画の特質を考察することに集中してきた。それによって個人作家としての宗達画の輪郭がかなり明確になってきたことは、近代美術史の大きな成果であったと言えよう。本研究はそれらの研究成果を踏まえ、宗達と宗達工房で生み出された作品の総体を改めて問い直し、その活動の歴史的な特質を考察しようとするものである。2022年度は、金銀泥絵と《源氏物語図屏風》（東京・静嘉堂文庫美術館蔵）を中心に分析した。宗達及び宗達工房の絵師が、料紙装飾としての金銀泥絵（色紙・巻子・冊子）、金銀泥摺（巻子）、雲母摺（色紙・巻子・冊子）に携わったのは、主として慶長年間（1596-1615）から元和年間（1615-24）であった。同時代の料紙装飾との造形的な違いについてはこれまでも指摘されてきたが、本研究ではその違いが生み出された要因を単に「独創的」や「創造的」とするのではなく、同時代における料紙装飾制作の実態を分析し、宗達工房の場合との共通性と違いをきめ細かに解析することに努めた。ただ同時代資料はかなりの量があり、結論を得るためには引き続き資料収集を行ってゆく必要がある。源氏物語図は日本の物語図の中でも特に多くの作例を残している。『源氏物語』が一種の文化的権威として機能してきたことが、その要因のひとつとして考えられる。そうした性格は源氏物語図の制作にも影を落とし、一定の規矩を守り、品格を保った源氏物語図の制作が求められた。宗達画の場合も大きくそれを逸脱するものではなかったが、今回の検証によって、白描小絵巻の《源氏物語図絵巻》を主として図柄の典拠として用いていたことが明らかとなった。公家女性が描いたという伝承ももつその絵巻を使用したのは宗達工房だけであり、その意味については他の屏風絵の分析も踏まえ、さらに考察する。
