本研究の基本的課題は、１７世紀初頭のローマにおける美術愛好家の位置を、当時のローマにおける経済・社会・文化的な総合的状況の中で再検討するというものである。令和４年度も、令和５年３月にいたるまで、海外出張は、出入国時におけるコロナワクチン接種証明の提示やPCR検査を受けて陰性を証明することなど、厳しい制約を受けており、大学の通常業務を遂行しながら、ある程度まとまった期間を確保し、有意義な海外出張調査を行うことは困難であった。このため、当初は、福岡で入手できる文献資料によって研究を進めることを余儀なくされたが、研究者はこの状況を活用し、狭義の美術史にとどまらず、当該時期のローマの経済・社会・文化史研究の主要文献を詳細に読解し、１７世紀ローマの社会・文化・経済的状況を総体として理解することを目指した。ドリュモーの１７世紀ローマ経済史、ウルバヌス８世治下のローマの政治状況を論じたヌースドルファーの著作、１７世紀ローマ支配層の経済的・文化的特質を論じたシュミットの著作など、いずれも狭義の「美術の歴史」とは直接関わらないが、これらの著作を通じて、美術作品の制作者、販売者、仲介業者、購買者、批評家などの総体として成立する１７世紀ローマ「美術世界（Artworld）」の特質を多角的に理解する上で重要な知見を多く獲得することができた。福岡大学では例年、３月は大学の業務が少なく、教育職員にとってまとまった時間をとれる喜ばしい時期だが、令和５年３月になって海外旅行の制限が大幅に緩和されたこともあり、３年ぶりに海外出張（ニューヨーク、ワシントン）を行った。市民と美術の関わりなど、米国におけるアートワールドの多様性について、現地で調査せずにはわからない知見を多く得ることができた。
