令和２年度から３年度にかけてコロナ禍のため、海外はもちろん国内でも移動が制限され、本研究計画の遂行に大きな支障が生じた。令和４年度についても、令和５年３月に至るまで海外旅行の制限が厳しかったため、大学での業務を行いながら一定の期間を確保し、海外に出張して作品調査、文献調査することは不可能だった。このため令和４年度の大部分の期間は、令和３年度と同様に、もっぱら福岡で入手できる文献資料に基づいて研究を進める事に費やされた。これまでの研究において、１７世紀ローマにおいて、室内壁面装飾として絵画を活用することが次第に広まり、美術市場はそれに伴って活性化し、絵画の売買が多様な形態で行われるようになっていたことが確認された。同時に、当時のローマで、絵画の収集や売買に積極的に関与するような文化的・経済的余裕を持つ人々はローマ住民のせいぜい２０％程度と考えることが妥当だということも、ドリュモーやシュミットなどの社会史的研究成果から確認された。ローマの「庶民」は、このような活性化しつつあった絵画市場とは無縁だったわけだが、サン・ピエトロ大聖堂をはじめとする、対抗改革以後、ローマで多く建設された新しい聖堂を飾る祭壇画は庶民にも公開されており、カトリック教会は教義に則ることはもちろんだが、庶民を引きつける魅力ある宗教美術制作を奨励した。こうした状況下に、ローマ庶民は単に聖人たちの生涯について学び、あるいはキリスト教の神髄にふれるためだけに聖堂の祭壇画を崇敬したのではなく、人物表現や風景表現、情景の説得力など、「芸術的な」側面からも鑑賞していたことが、バリオーネやパッセリ、ベッローリなどによる同時代の文献資料から、確認された。同時に、美術に関心のある知識人たちも、「庶民」が美術にどのように接するかということにも関心を持っていたことが確認された。
