本研究の目的は、1978年から現在に至る水上勉の竹人形文楽の公演活動の全容を明らかにすることである。水上が創始した竹人形文楽は、人形浄瑠璃の芸態を参考にした現代口語の語りによる二人遣いの文楽式「人形劇」ということができるが、その舞台様式および竹人形の操法は特異なものである。竹の素材を活かして創られた竹人形そのものが他に類例の無い独創的な機能を持つため、操演に際し、特異な人形操作術が人形遣いに求められることとなった。研究初年度の本年度は、竹人形文楽の基礎資料を収蔵する若州一滴文庫人形館の展示竹人形を中心に、主として竹人形の形態調査および竹人形文楽に関わった座員への聞き取り調査を行った。現存する竹人形は、当人形館の所蔵および若州人形座の所有分が全てであることがわかっているが、人形館展示の竹人形を作品別に調査した結果、竹人形文楽の公演で実働した人形数と展示人形の数が合わないことが分かった。これは、作品によって人形の使い回しが行われ、A作品のa人形のボディーをB作品のb人形に面だけを付け替えて再使用するということが行われていたことによるものである。この事実により、竹人形文楽の舞台様式および竹人形の人形操作術の変遷を竹人形の製作年代の仕様から推定するという当初の調査方法は見直しを余儀なくされた。上記の理由により、研究初年度は初演時の使用竹人形の選別および特定というところからリスタートすることになり、現在、ひきつづき調査を行っている。
