告白小説、私小説と呼ばれるものは明治末に生まれ、大正期に大きく発展する。この動きは文学者の私生活を公的な意味を帯びたものとして盛んに報道していく当時の言論環境と密接に結びついている。こうした展開を明らかにするために2点の調査をおこなった。第一に、明治期、大正初期の文学が思想界に勢力を強めていく展開を検討した。文学という営みは武力や法や行政措置などの政治的な手立てとは異なるかたちで、つまり思想的な新陳代謝を促したり討議空間を作り直したりすることで、当時の社会に強い影響を及ぼしていた。この知見を『変革する文体』（名古屋大学出版会、2022年）終章に発表した。第二に、明治末、大正期の作家論の隆盛を分析した。文学者は日露戦争後に偉人化し、その作品と人生を論じることが公的な意味を持つという自覚が芽生える。それに連なって作家論という営みが本格化し、さらに文学者の全集や書簡や日記などの資料群が生み出される。この潮流のなかで、文学作品とともに、その作者の人生観や人格や生活そのものを味わう、人物鑑賞と呼ぶべき文化享受の作法が広まった。そして作家論は1910年代に文学者たちの壮麗な人格の展示場を築くことで、個人主義の前進の様子を社会に示した。この動きは政治家や軍人などの旧式の英雄とは異なる、新たな英雄を日本に備えつけるという意味を持っていた。今日の文学者研究の盛況ぶりはこの蓄積のうえにある。現在の予定では以上のことをまとめた論文が『国語と国文学』2023年7月号に発表される。
