本研究では、正岡子規と同郷・同時代の地方政治家で、俳人だった森盲天外に着目した。森は視覚障碍がありながら、俳句・自伝など旺盛に執筆し、日本文学史を見ても稀有な障碍当事者作家といえる。彼の活躍は政治家の面が取り上げられ、文学的な側面は脚光を浴びてこなかった。そこで本研究は、彼の多彩な活動を日本近代文学において新たな障碍当事者作家として位置づけることを目的とする。具体的には、まず彼の新出資料（未発表原稿）のデータ保存と公表、その価値を世に広く知らせることを主軸として作業を進めている。松山市余戸公民館の調査で見つかった新出資料（未発表の草稿）は四点あり、眠っていた資料を社会に共有して森盲天外の偉業を知ってもらうと同時に、森盲天外研究の発展に寄与できると考える。R4年度は初年度であり、公民館にて再度原稿の原本を撮影させていただき、データ保存した。その画像から研究責任者が翻刻作業をし、専門の翻刻業者にも依頼した。ダブルチェックにより翻刻の精度を担保した。今年度はうちの一編「島津家と盲人保護」を「森盲天外『島津家と盲人保護』（新出資料）」として論文化した。『島津家の盲人保護』自体も、障碍当事者から提案する障碍者福祉という非常に先進性の高い内容であり、あらためて森盲天外の慧眼が光る内容で、森盲天外研究としても価値ある資料であった。当該論文の解説にて、視覚障碍者の歴史や同時代の社会福祉の状況をふまえ、新出資料の社会的な意義を評価した。また今回の論文執筆にあたり、日本の視覚障碍者や福祉制度の歴史、また明治期の社会福祉制度に関する文献にも広くあたったことで、更なる文献収集も出来た。今後も順次残りの未発表原稿の翻刻を解説付きで論文化する予定である。また継続して資料調査をし、森盲天外の再評価や作家研究の発展へと繋げていく予定である。
