2022年度は『オセロー』の比較的長めのFolio-only passageに焦点を当て、今まであまり注目されてこなかった三つの特徴を明らかにした。一つ目の特徴は、テクスト上の問題箇所(crux)が存在するケースが多いことである。例えば、3幕3場でオセローがイヤーゴに語る“My name、 that was as fresh / As Dian’s visage” という台詞のMy nameについて、多くの編纂者がHer nameに変更すべきか悩んできた。このような問題個所はいくつかのF-only passageに見られる。二つ目の特徴は、意味があいまいな表現が含まれるケースが多いことである。例えば、3幕3場でイヤーゴに嫉妬を掻き立てられたオセローが「紐、ナイフ、毒」と叫ぶとき、編纂者の意見は、オセローは自殺を考えているとする解釈と、キャシオーとデズデモーナに対する復讐をイメージしているという解釈に分かれてきた。このようなあいまいな表現が含まれるのも、いくつかのF-only passageに共通する特徴である。三つ目の特徴は、コミカルな要素が含まれるケースが多いことである。例えば、4幕2場のデズデモーナが、ひざまずいて自分の潔白を誓うときに駄洒落を言う場面である。このような場違いとも言えるコミカルな要素は5幕2場のエミリアの台詞にも見られる。研究代表者は、F-only passageはQの印刷の過程で削除されたと考えている。削除の理由は、多くの場合、複数存在したはずだが、今回分析したF-only passageの三つの特徴は、それらが印刷原稿から削除されたことと深い関係があるはずであり、とりわけ、あいまいな表現とコミカルな要素の削除は、削除者の意図が、主人公たちのイメージアップにあったことを示唆しているように見える点で大変興味深い。
