・2022年8月13日から20日まで、オクスフォードに滞在し、オクスフォード大学ウェストン図書館所蔵のJ. R. R. トールキンの手稿調査を行った。先ず、本研究課題の主目的である『ベオルフトヘルムの息子ベオルフトノスの帰還』(以下『帰還』と略記)の草稿すべてのデータの収集に努め、その成果としてMS Tolkien 5におけるfols.1-73の手稿閲覧と文字起こし用のデータ保存を行った。タイプ原稿は閲覧はできたが、データの記録を取るには1週間の滞在では不可能であった。この結果、判読不能の箇所を残し、判読可能箇所の文字起こしの原データの作成が可能となった。・また、『帰還』のインスピレーションの源泉である古英詩『モールドンの戦い』(以下『モールドン』と略記)のための講義ノートの手稿の閲覧も行った。特に『モールドン』現代語散文訳と古英詩解釈の註のデータを集めた。・この調査結果によって、①トールキンの執筆過程を俯瞰的に把握できること、②古英詩の解釈としての現代英語訳と、戯曲作品の中の現代英語表現の比較照合を可能にしたという意義と持つ。この結果はまた、『モールドン』を用いて大学内での教育にどのようにトールキンが活かしたかを考察する出発点となるため、古英詩研究の社会への還元方法を見つけるための重要な参考資料となる。・また、手稿に書かれた年代附記('1932')から、この研究成果は科研費申請時には視野に入らなかった、トールキンの1930年代の研究教育活動を視野に入れることを可能にした。これはトールキン研究の観点からも、先行研究では触れられていなかった部分を埋める意義を持ち、今後の研究の発展に結びつく可能性を示唆するという点で極めて重要な成果である。特に評論社から出版された『指輪物語』最新版編集に大きく寄与した。・この成果は2023年度日本中世英語英文学会にて発表する予定である。
