Christopher Marlowe _Dr. Faustus_(1604, 1616)冒頭、主人公はアリストテレス以降のさまざまなギリシャ・ラテンの著作に言及し、人類の知性の集積を賛美しつつ、同時にその限界に絶望してみせもする。人智の限界の彼方には聖書の存在が、そして罪とその罰としての死についての言及は、かれを「その先の知」へと駆り立てる。そこに待つのは魔術の領域だ。ここに至り、知にたいする「過剰な欲求」は罪として描かれる。果たせるかな、悪魔との契約ののち、フォースタスの好奇心にたいしてメフィストフェレスは一冊の本を与え、問いへの答えが帰された箇所を指し示し続ける。読むこと・知ることはかくして悪魔的実践へ、禁じられた知へと向かうことになる。存在はするけれども読むことが抑制される本、知的好奇心が向かうことを許されない知の領域の設定ーそれらは逆説的に、人間をより強い知的好奇心へと導くことなるだろう。こうした御しがたい知的好奇心は、やがてその対象を厳格に科学的な言説としてとりまとめて行くプロセスで、かかる禁忌が俗習に、すなわち実態を伴わない迷信に基づくものとして退けることで、狭隘物を取り除き、同時に用語の厳格な統一的定義を導き出すことで、科学的言説としてのアイデンティティを確立して行くことなる。マーロウの戯曲から、悪魔の召喚の呪文が検閲によって削除されたことを想起するならば、近代科学の黎明期・分水嶺の推移を、この時代のいくつかの文芸作品に辿ることが可能であるように思われる。研究初年度は、こうした問題意識に基づいて、マーロウの作品に言及される古典文献が、当時の英国の知財としてどの程度認知され、共有・言及されていたのかということについて、主としてEEBO(Early English Books Online)上の横断検索を手かがりとして、関連言説の検索と収集・分類を行った。
