人間言語の起源・進化の問題を考究する進化言語学において，本研究はこれまで等閑視されてきた感のある語彙進化の問題を統語の進化と平行的に捉え，両者を統一的に理解・説明することを目指すものである．理論基盤となる最新生成文法（ミニマリスト・プログラム）では，人間言語の特質である階層文法のルーツを最も単純化された回帰的組み合わせ操作「併合 Merge」に求めながらも，これまでその起源・進化については積極的な考察を怠ってきた．これに対し本研究者が提案した「運動制御起源仮説」は，この併合は道具作製などに見られる階層的物体組み合わせ操作にあるとし，漸進的でより進化的妥当性の高い理論を展開してきた．そこで重視されるのは，結果的に人間言語専用とされる併合も，その進化においてはそうではなく，他種のもつ諸能力との連続性を維持するものであるという点であった．本研究は語彙進化についてもこの同じ進化的連続性が成立すると仮定し，他種に見られる語彙「的」機能と人間の語彙との種間比較を行い，その差を埋めることで語彙の自然な進化シナリオを提案する．特に，本研究者が既に提案した語彙の形成にも併合が関わるとする「統語・語彙平行進化」の仮説や他種では渾然一体となっている語彙範疇と機能範疇が分離したことが語彙進化の重要な側面であるとする「分離仮説」を発展させるものである．
