20世紀の言語学 (特に構造言語学) では、全ての言語が等しく複雑であるという主張がなされた。これが等複雑性の公理 (equi-complexity axiom) である。等複雑性の公理では、各言語の文法 (形態素や構文構造など) は、単純なサブシステムと複雑なサブシステムから構成されるが、全体としての複雑さは、全ての言語で同じだと考えられている (サブシステムとは音韻や屈折形態や構文などを指す) 。この公理の妥当性は、20世紀の間は厳密な検証がなされなかったが、21世紀に入り、様々なコーパスの普及や、高度な統計的分析手法の開発が進んだことにより、多くの研究者がこの公理の妥当性を検証するようになった。本研究課題の核心をなす学術的問いは、「等複雑性の公理は、世界諸英語 (World Englishes) においてどの程度当てはまるのか」である。この問いに答えるために、第一言語 (L1) と第二言語 (L2) を含む数々の英語変種群における等複雑性の公理の妥当性を明らかにすることを研究目的としている。研究実施計画では、2022年4月 ~ 2023年3月の期間は、Corpus of Global Web-Based English (GloWbE) を用いて、形態統語的特徴の分布をレジスター毎に比較することになっていた。この計画にしたがい、2022年度に実施したGloWbEデータに対する研究では、分析性 (analyticity) と総合性 (syntheticity) には正の相関があること、すなわち、分析的変種は総合性も高いこと、そしてその逆もまた然りであることが分かった。また、レジスター変異性については、GloWbEを構成するGeneralとBlogsのセクション間では、後者において、分析性と総合性のより強い正の相関が見られることが確認された。
