本研究の目的は、①英語の学習段階から習熟段階に至る日本人英語に継続的に見られ「日本的主観性」や「日本的談話構造」を反映する用法を、日本人英語の「モダリティ表現」や「主題化表現」の中から取り上げ、その語用論特徴を抽出すること、②それらの英語表現の基底にある認知的・文化的な関与要因を他のアジア地域の英語使用との比較を通して分析すること、③それらの英語表現が日本人英語として国際汎用性を持ちうる範囲と条件を国際英語論の視点から確認することである。2022年度の理論的研究としては、World Englishes English as a Lingua Franca, English as an International Language等の諸理論の統合的枠組みとして用いられるGlobal Englishesとそれに基づく英語教育（GELT)に関する文献研究を行った。実践的研究としては、GELTを用いた英文法・語法の指導による日本人英語に対する大学生の認識の変化の調査を行い、GELTの有効性についてバンコクでのThe 42nd Thai TESOLにて中間発表を行った。また日本人英語の研究としては、英語学術論文テキストにおいて日本人学生や大学院生が自らを「筆者」として言及する際に用いる「the author」「I」「We」などの出現頻度と出現環境の違いをコーパスを用いて抽出し「自己言及」に関する日本人英語の特徴の分析を試みた。その結果、近年の英語母語話者論文では「I」の使用が望ましいとされる傾向があるのに対し、日本人学生はむしろ「I」の使用を避ける傾向にあること、また国際学会によって「自己言及」の方法に関する規範に相違があることが判明したこれらの研究成果はJAAL in JACETにて研究発表を行い、関連のproceedingsに掲載された。
