本研究は、基盤研究（C）、2018年度～2021年度　「姫路藩領における綿業の展開と領主権力・地域社会」での成果を踏まえながら、姫路藩における木綿専売制の実現過程を、地域社会との関係、また幕府に禁止された木綿の江戸積の分析からも解明し、その歴史的意義に迫ることを目的としている。当該年度においては、地域経済の発展に果たした姫路藩の役割を踏まえ、その後の木綿専売制の展開を、藩権力と取締役（地域で木綿の生産・流通を管理）との関係に注目して分析することを課題とした。具体的には、第一に、姫路藩木綿専売制の地域的展開を支えた取締役に関する詳細な史料を多く含む大歳家（兵庫県加古川市）の所蔵文書のうち、未整理史料の目録作成を行いつつ、目録作成が終了している史料の解読と分析を進めた。取締役関係の史料がまとまって現存しており、取締役を任命した姫路藩の木綿専売制に対する方針なども知ることができ、今後の研究を進めていく上で有益な情報に触れることができた。第二に、これまでに収集した姫路藩の木綿専売制関係の藩政史料（個人蔵）と大歳家文書を併せて分析し、領主権力と取締役との関係を詳細に明らかにすることに着手した。木綿専売制の政策主体たる領主権力、そして、その政策の地域社会における実現主体たる取締役の役割を分析することで、木綿専売制の地域的展開のための仕組みを解明するのである。この点については、大歳家文書の未整理史料の目録作成を中心とした調査研究が進むにつれ、さらに進展するであろう。本研究では、かつて経済史の立場からのみ分析されてきた姫路藩の木綿専売制を、領主権力を含めた地域的展開、そして国家権力・江戸市場との関係から見た全国的展開へも視野を広げ、従来の研究を批判的に継承・発展させようとしているが、そのための基礎的な作業が進み、糸口も得られた。研究初年度としては、申し分のない成果だと考える。
