本研究は、ニュージーランドの大衆文化「キーウィアナ」を対象として、ニュージーランド“らしさ”の要素を検討し、当該社会に内在する白人性や「他者」の構築の理解につなげようとするものである。2022年度はキーウィアナ概念及びその歴史的推移の整理を主眼としたが、その中で特に「女性」というテーマがキーウィアナの変容とどう関わっているのかについて考察を進めた。キーウィアナと称されるモチーフやアイコンには、特に白人男性の抱く「古き良き時代」のニュージーランドに対するノスタルジーと強い結びつきがあることは先行研究で指摘されているところである。新聞・雑誌記事等にみられる、趣味の追求として「内に向かう」関心としてのキーウィアナの扱いにおいては確かにそうした一面が裏付けられている。その一方でしばしばキーウィアナの表象からは排除されがちな女性性についても整理を行った。その一環として、ニュージーランドの女性参政権運動について振り返り、その現代的な意義について検討した。考察の一部については、日本ニュージーランド学会研究大会シンポジウム（22022年7月30日）において発表を行った。9月の調査においては、観光資源のような「外に向けた」文脈において、女性参政権実現という「世界初の」「女性に関わる」歴史的偉業がキーウィアナのモチーフとして加えられている例など、新しい活用・表現が確認できた。文化的アイデンティティに内包される「我々」と「他者」の区別の揺れを考察する上で注視すべき知見である。また、現地調査期間がエリザベス女王逝去と重なったことで、キーウィアナのようなニュージーランドの独自性に求めるニュージーランド“らしさ”とは対照的な、イギリスとの絆に求めるニュージーランド“らしさ”の追及を目の当たりにすることができた。キーウィアナの社会的意味・意義についての考察を進める上での示唆となった。
