本研究課題では、18世紀から19世紀前半に東インド航路を移動したヨーロッパ系の社会集団が残した史料群を「移動史料」と定義し、史料収集・整理・分析を進め、航路上の移動と接触によって現れる「接触領域」のケーススタディとして南部アフリカのケープを取り上げている。当該時期のケープの深い移動史料分析を目的として、グローバルな歴史背景、航路・植民都市・入植地の展開を検証しつつ、史料調査を進め実証的研究基盤を確立する。特に、人文社会各領域において議論が進められている接触領域の概念を、歴史学における史料研究の方法に対置しながら有効性を検証し最適な史料利用の方法を探る学術的な意義を有している。さらに、東インド航路上の接触領域と史料研究の視点を背景として、ヨーロッパ系社会集団が残した史料の読解から「見えにくい人々」の可視化を試みる。史料調査の対象は①英蘭東インド会社商館文書等の商業文書②南部アフリカのイギリス駐留軍人関連文書③南アフリカのキリスト教宣教団関連文書に描かれた接触領域における多様な人々の交流の諸相を詳細に抽出する。その過程で、東インド航路を移動し入植地で奴隷として働く人々のあり方、南部アフリカに移動・駐留する兵士、現地エージェント、ローカルな人々と入植者たちの関係性に注目していく。今年度は代表者・研究分担者それぞれが史料の歴史背景、および研究動向整理にまず着手した。さらに、本課題で利用するための史料データベースの選定を進めるとともに、今後の現地調査の方向性を検討した。これらの結果は、4月と3月のオンラインによる研究集会で共有し、研究テーマである接触領域における史料研究の現在地を明らかにしている。
