本研究では、東アジア先史時代において「編む」から「織る」への編織技術革新が、技術進化的には如何に達成され、結果として当時の生活・文化・社会の諸要素に如何なる変化をもたらしたのか、考古学的実証によって解明することを目指す。そのために、①編織物資料の集成・分類・編年、②「編む」から「織る」への技術革新プロセスのモデル化、③遺跡・遺構・遺物から見た編織技術革新の影響評価の３つを四ヵ年で実施する計画である。それぞれの前提となる実作業としては、資料調査・民俗／民族調査・製作実験等を行う。初年度である令和４（2022）年度は、まず当初計画通り、７月までは編織物に関する情報を徹底的に集め、データを整理した。その過程で、６月に愛知県清須市朝日遺跡から出土した編織物・編織具の実見調査も行い、弥生時代の編織技術に関する良好な情報を得た。その後、国内外の新型コロナウイルス感染流行状況等から判断して、８月以降に計画していた日本国内及び中国での編織物・編織具の資料調査・民俗／民族調査を、タイ北部山地民の民族調査に切り替えて実施した。調査期間は８月中～下旬の半月ほどであったが、タイ北部の山地に住むモン族・ラフ族・アカ族の各村で編織物の製作・使用の実態を詳細に観察・記録することができ、想定以上の参考情報を得た。特にラフ族については、現地の方々の好意的な協力により、編物蓋付木製甑の製作過程の一部始終（素材採集から蓋・甑の完成まで）を観察・記録することができた。また、村内日常生活、水田・畑作業、治癒儀礼等、各場面における編物の使用のあり方も知ることができ、中には東アジア先史時代に当てはめることができるような民具・民族情報を得ることに成功した。現地のカゴ類や編織具などに対して、三次元計測を含む詳細な記録も取ったので、それらのデータは今後の考古資料との比較に用いる予定である。
