本研究は、和紙植物「雁皮」の生育・栽培・採集、および「雁皮紙」の生産・消費の現場におけるフィールドワークを行い、雁皮や雁皮紙の価値が如何に生まれ、流通していくのかを民族誌として記述し、雁皮／雁皮紙の生産・流通・消費の全体像を明らかにすることを目的とする。本年度は、国内で雁皮・雁皮紙にかかわる実践の参与観察や、聞き取り調査、資料収集を行った。勤務校のある首都圏では、図書館や博物館を活用し、雁皮の生態や採集の状況、および製紙業全般のなかでの雁皮紙の状況について理解するための資料収集を行うとともに、紙漉きや、和紙の利用にかかわる人びとへの聞き取り調査を行った。2022年10月～11月には、高知・愛媛での調査を実施した。高知県では、森林保全活動を行うNPO法人の協力のもと、雁皮の採集や栽培、および皮はぎ作業の参与観察を行うとともに、映像記録の撮影を行った。あわせて関係者に雁皮の栽培をめぐる実践的知識について、聞き取り調査を行った。また愛媛県では雁皮紙を漉いてきた工房を視察するともに、関係者への聞き取り調査を行った。高知県立図書館、愛媛県立図書館では、雁皮や雁皮紙についての資料収集を行った。2023年2月には滋賀県、福井県で雁皮の調達や雁皮紙の生産の状況について、和紙生産関係者への聞き取り調査を行った。また兵庫県では雁皮の栽培に取り組む、市民団体の活動の参与観察を行うとともに、関係者への聞き取り調査を行った。今後の研究基盤を整えるため、ノートパソコンやデジタルカメラなどの記録や資料整理をするための備品を購入した。植物や自然資源の活用について研究する歴史学や経済学者、および和紙を使った製作を行う美術作家などと、それぞれの専門的知見をめぐった意見交換を行い、研究ネットワークの構築をはかった。
