Smith（1972）などの先行研究などで論じられているような、ソールズベリーの幼少期から一貫して見られるきわめて理知的で目的の実現を優先する実用的な性格から、政党についてもまた、彼自身の目的を実現するための手段としての位置づけが明確だったようである。当時の保守党指導層の妥協的政治姿勢の一端は、こうした実利的な思考に由来するものと見ることができるかもしれないが、本研究は、コロナ禍の影響で一昨年度からの研究の遅れが影響して、まだ端緒についたばかりと言うべき状況であり、ソールズベリーの論文が保守党や党指導層に与えた影響にも注目しながら、『クォータリー・レビュー』誌上で発表された彼の論文の分析をさらに進めていく必要がある。
