本研究の目的は、マクロ・ミクロ経済に大きな影響を及ぼす実質為替レートについて、「PPP （購買力平価）puzzle」に関わる２つの特性、すなわち、①均衡状態への収束スピードに関わる粘着性（persistence）、②均衡からの乖離の大きさに関わる変動性（volatility）、について従来とは異なるアプローチにより解明することにある。「PPP puzzle」とは、実質為替レートにある高い粘着性と比較的大きな変動性という２つの特徴が、既存のモデルでは再現できないことを指す。本研究では、この２つの特徴の相互関係を明らかにすることを通じて、「PPP puzzle」解明の一助とすることを目指している。研究の初年度にあたる本年度は、以下の２つの研究成果が得られた。第一に、途上国も含めた幅広いクロスセクションのデータを使い分析した結果、実質レートの粘着性と変動性の関係は、非線形の凸関数に近似できることが分かった。非線形の関係性は途上国、先進国のいずれでも観察でき、途上国は先進国に比べて全体として変動度が大きく、粘着性は低くなっていた。この非線形の関係性は、これまでのこの分野の先行研究では明らかにされていなかった点である。第二に、価格の粘着性とマネタリーショックを基本とするニューケインジアンモデルを使って、実証分析で得られた粘着性と変動性の非線形の関係を再現できるかを検討した（モデルはCarvalho, et.al（2019）を参考にした）。その結果、（１）粘着性と変動性が非線形の関係にあるのは主に、モデル上の全要素生産性（TFP）の粘着性を規定するパラメータの違いに依存している、（２）途上国は先進国に比べて全体として変動度が大きく、粘着性は低くなっているのは、モデルのインフレ率の金融政策反応パラメータに依存している、ということが明らかになった。
