本研究の目的は、戦前日本のマッチ製造業者の経営活動を一次史料に基づいて考察し、その意義と限界を解明することである。具体的内容は、白鹿記念酒造博物館に所蔵されている辰馬本家のマッチ製造・販売に関する一次史料を利用し、①マッチ製造業者による生産コストの削減や品質維持のための対応を考察すること、②マッチ製造業者と委託販売先との関係の変化を考察すること、の２つで構成されている。2022年度と2023年度は、一次史料の調査・収集およびその他の関連資料の収集を計画しており、2022年度は、①の考察に必要な一次史料の調査を中心に行なった。その結果、マッチ原料の調達・利用等に関する一次史料を収集することができた。これらの史料の解読作業は完了させられなかったものの、①の考察についてある程度の見通しがたった。また、②の考察に必要な一次史料も含め、白鹿記念酒造博物館に所蔵されているマッチ関連史料の大半を調査することができ、所蔵史料の全体像をつかむことができた。このほか、国立国会図書館や各大学図書館が所蔵する図書資料やデジタル化資料を利用し、マッチ工業に関する基礎的な統計資料を整理したほか、旧高等商業学校の修学旅行報告書や新聞記事・雑誌記事などの関連資料の収集を行った。
