研究初年度となる2022年度は、本研究の目的である19世紀前半におけるスコットランドの国内産業とアジアとのつながりを明らかにするために、19世紀にグラスゴーを拠点として海外貿易や綿糸・綿織物製造に従事したジェームズ・フィンリイ商会および同商会を率いたカークマン・フィンリイの経歴に関する既往の文献の調査をおこなった。特に、1950年代に編纂された同商会の社史に掲載されているカークマン・フィンリイから在ボンベイのA・S・フィンリイに宛てられた書簡等を分析した。これにより、1834年の中国貿易開放後のフィンリイ商会による東インド貿易の詳細の一部を明らかにすることができた。例えば、開放前に高い期待が寄せられていた中国貿易に関して、1834年の自由化以降、新規参入者間の競争のために、フィンリイ商会は利益の確保に苦労することになった。これとは対照的に、インド貿易は同時期までに同商会にとって最も重要な部門となっていた。ただし、東インド貿易商としての地位を確立していた同商会は、自社産の綿製品をアジアへ輸出することに必ずしもこだわった訳ではなく、好景気時には国内市場を優先し、国外市場向けにはランカシャーの市場で安価に購入した他社の綿製品を輸出した。逆に、不況時には、アジア向けに自社産綿製品の輸出を増やすことによって、同商会は工場の操業と雇用を維持することができた。このようにアジア市場は同商会の製造業部門のための安全弁としての役割を果たしていたと考えられる。

The most important part of the trade is the trade union. The position of traders in the East is established, and the export of their own products is guaranteed. In good times, the domestic market is given priority, and the foreign market is purchased safely. In the meantime, the company will continue to improve the quality of its products and services. The market is the same as the chamber of commerce's manufacturing sector.
