総合商社の取引には、グローバルに統合された市場取引と、まだ顕在化されていない市場を創造する取引の二つが存在する。そして、総合商社の機能の本質は、後者のような新規のプロジェクトや事業の運営に際して、収集した情報をもとに世界中から必要な人材や取引先など適材を集めて組織化し、有機的に機能させる能力にあるといえる。これまで日本に固有な業態とされる総合商社の研究は豊富だが、従来、こうした商社の機能を実現する上で不可欠な情報生産ともいえる活動がどのように行われているのかという本質的問いに迫る研究は、その方法論的な難しさから試みられることがなかった.そこで、本研究では、総合商社の存続にとって根本的な機能である情報生産の実態に迫るべく、最適解が当事者を含めて予見的に判断できない不完備契約をすり合わせる場としての接待に注目して、経済学的な分析を行う。総合商社の本質は市場がまだ成立していない機会をとらえてビジネスを創造することにあるが、こうした機能がいかに発揮されるのかを実証的に解明することは史料的制約からこれまで難しいとされてきた。本研究では、第一に、三菱商事の総合決算表を用いて、接待に要した費用と個別の取引の各種取引関連の係数との相関を統計的に分析する。第二に、北米西岸店で行われていた海外渡航者接待に関する統計処理可能な長期データを構築して、接待における情報生産を経済学的に分析する。以上の分析を通じて、旧来の研究では解明しえなかった商社の本質的機能の解明が可能となる。
