本研究では、「日本の宗教法人のアカウンタビリティの現在の実態を明らかにすること」を目的とし、これまで主に欧州で先駆的に取り組まれてきた定量的研究と定性的研究の分析枠組みを日本の文脈へと応用することにより、非西洋国における宗教組織のアカウンタビリティに関する既存研究の空白を埋めることを主眼としている。具体的には、文化庁が発行している『宗教年鑑』の宗教統計において、文部科学大臣所轄包括宗教法人の内、諸教等を除く神道系、仏教系、キリスト教系における各宗派の総信者数に占める所属信者数が4割を超える主要な法人を抽出し、それぞれの法人の情報開示状況を、公開情報及びインタビュー調査によって得られる情報に基づいて分析する。初年度には、上記枠組みに基づき、個別報告書あるいはHP上で開示している（あるいは開示する予定である・意思がある）か否かを問う、アンケート調査を予定していた。しかし、2022年7月の安倍元首相の銃撃事件を受け、研究協力者と協議した結果、当初予定していたアンケート調査の実施を延期することとした。その理由は、上記の事件を受け、各宗教法人が情報を開示すること（アンケート調査への回答をも含む）に対して消極的になっていることが予想され、平常時になされたイギリスでの調査枠組みを直接的に援用するに際して、回答にバイアスがかかる可能性があることを懸念したことである。とりわけ本調査のような開示の背景を調査するようなセンシティブな内容については、客観的なデータを得ることが難しくなることが予想される。そのため、今年度には研究計画の変更を行い、文献調査へと専念したため、現時点では、具体的な研究成果として報告できるような実績は上がっていない。
